He had potential.

I did love him.

But not for who he was

Or who he is

And continues to be

(Despite all my loving).

I loved his potential.

And it's hard to recognize

That potential,

In itself, is just

Mediocrity in disguise.

In a way,

I still think

That is must be okay

To love the person who could be

Through the person who is.

And maybe it's up to them

To do the rest of the work.
